Can Computers Meditate ?

“It is too easy to say things like, ‘Computers can’t do (xxx), because they have no feelings, or thoughts’. But here’s a way to turn such sayings into foolishness. Change them to read like this. ‘Computers can’t do (xxx), because all they can do is execute incredibly intricate processes, perhaps millions at a time’. Now, such objections seem less convincing – yet all we did was face one simple, complicated fact: we really don’t yet know what the limits of computers are.” Marvin Minsky, WHY PEOPLE THINK COMPUTERS CAN‘T, AI Magazine, Fall 1982

Meditation for Avatars is the first example of meditation for a computer network. According to the theory of Japa Yoga, a Mantra arouses the practitioner’s spiritual awareness through being constantly repeated.

Japa Yoga is particularly suitable for computer meditation because it is an exact science. Japa Meditation operates with precise data. The 100,000-fold repetition per syllable of a mantra rouses the spiritual energy harboured within the mantra. The OM Mantra is repeated 100,000 times, the five-syllable Siva Mantra is repeated 500,000 times, the twelve-syllable Krishna 1,200,000 times, the twenty-four-syllable Gayatri Mantra 2,400,000 times. In order to be able to accurately accomplish the repetitions, Japa practitioners must display high concentration, absolute accuracy and discipline – capabilities and attributes for which computers were always distinctive.
